Day 31 #MakeArt365

Problem of Orthogonal Projectors, ink, 2015

Minimal but I'm having fun with these. In the life's little mysteries department: why in 2004 or so was I taking class notes on a NYC Transit Authority official memo pad from the 60's turned upside down? Most of that I know the answer to, but why upside down?

Day 28 #MakeArt365

Concept Sketch for Promise Keeping Machine Mk2, mixed media, 2015

Everything can be improved with an obscure literary allusion. A prize if anyone can get it, though my somewhat loose botanical renderings make it rather hard. Back to this idea, I'm almost thinking about building it (or adding it to the queue), though as is often the case, once you really think about it, you realize you'll be fabricating the whole thing and wont use any of your stash of weird doodads at all (other than my only spare glass dome).

Day 27 #MakeArt365

Now I'm just messing around. I meant to draw snow today, but black moths came out instead. Microevolution I'm told.

Day 26 #MakeArt365

Fish, ink on paper, 2015
The fish are starting to disturb me; I never draw fish. I never used to draw fish. I used to know some linear algebra. I always have had bad handwriting. (Collecting old scrap paper for a papier mache work in progress and a cache of notes from Robust Computer Vision with Peter Meer emerged, that's the substrate.)

Day 21 MakeArt365

Dream Sequence I, pencil, 2015

In the keeping it weird department: Ever have one of those dreams where all kinds of crazy stuff happens but one image winds up burned into your mind. The other night I dreamed I was a super hero (of course). I did typical super hero stuff, fought flesh eating aliens, brawled with other super heroes. I've forgotten the details already. But what sticks in my mind is taking a shower, watching the dried blood dissolve, and looking at the gashes and bruises covering my skin. Weird.

Day 19 #MakeArt365

Like a Vessel at the Launch, When its Last Restraint is Gone, ink 2015
Day 19 #MakeArt365
More a sketch as a memorandum for when it's not past my bedtime than a drawing...

Day 16 #MakeArt365

Shell Shock, pencil on paper 2015
Sometimes a message washes up at your feet, as if still held in a drowned hand. The title of plate 46 in Georges Rouault's Miserere by Frank and Dorothy Getlein, given to me by an old friend this evening: "Le juste, comme le bois de santal, parfume la hache qui le frappe."

Day 14 #MakeArt365

Concept Sketch for 'Promise Keeping Machine', mixed media, 2015

In concept sketch land again. Every now and then I take out my boxes of found object sculpture stuff and plan a few elaborate pieces, then put it all away again...

Day 13 #MakeArt365

Concept Sketch for Furie Mask, pencil on paper, 2015
Loosely inspired by Shikami Noh mask. It wasn't meant to look that evil, more stern. Funny that how hard it is to control how emotions read.

I was home sick and was out of bed long enough to do a bit of drawing.

Day 7 #MakeArt365

Day 7 ‪#‎MakeArt365‬ A quickie. Maybe that blue streak on the scans is a feature.

Day 6 #MakeArt365

Someone asked me to do something that would make me happy, This is what I had in me before collapsing in a heap as early as possible. The warm pupil cool eye color contrast trick makes me happy. The blue streak down my scans does not.

Day 5 #MakeArt365 (a bit late)

Ruins, pencil on paper, 2015
I kind of forgot to post, but I did it...

Day 2, #MakeArt365

Day 2 ‪#‎makeart365‬ Make Art 365 (note my switching to Arabic numerals after the debacle of me trying to count to high Roman numerals for my tree stump pictures last year)

Untitled Face, mixed media, 2015

The kind of riff on a random internet photo I used to do so much of, I kind of miss it since 'becoming serious'. While lacking a point, there is something very relaxing about doodling off a reference with nothing at stake.
Concept Sketch for Entwife, pencil 2015
The drawing is a concept sketch for the female companion to the ent head in search of a body I've been working on carving on and off. Several levels of indirection from making it to 3D alas...

Day I, #MakeArt365

Wood Wife, mixed media, 2015

I took up fellow artist Imo Nse Imeh’s challenge to join him in #MakeArt365 an effort to refocus artistically by resolving to create work every day. Personally, I've taken this on as a challenge to make and post a complete work, most likely a doodle or sketch every day.  I’m glad of a reason to refocus a little bit of my energy on drawing, neglected of late, and hoping to regain some of the focus of my late tree stump project. I’m not going to stick to a consistent theme, but the phrase ‘men as trees walking’ has been on my mind. On one obvious level confusion of trees and people has been a long standing theme in my work. Given my interest in visual cognition the line always caught my attention because it seems to be making a distinction both cognitive and spiritual between sight and vision.  The pursuit of vision, and the trial of seeing, but being incapable of understanding what is before you has weighed on me of late.  In any case I’m starting with a fairly elaborate sketch, percolating for a while, but executed today.
