Day 236 #MakeArt365

Do Shadows Need to Eat, pencil, 2015
Though I fear this isn't much of an advertisement for it, I have to credit Lavinia Roberts touching theatrical adaptation:, which I saw tonight and can recommend highly, as the piece's very indirect inspiration.

Day 233 #MakeArt365

Dream Sequence III: I See a Darkness, ink, 2015
On Cedar lane, I think. A flash. Lightning and a ball of fire against a wall of blackness not blocking but cut into the surrounding blue sky.

Day 227 #MakeArt365

Under the Evening Cherry Blossoms, ink, 2015

“Mother, where was I really born?”
Shige looked at Takichiro.
“Under the evening cherry blossoms of Gion,” her father said flatly.

Day 226 #MakeArt365

Lantern, pencil, 2015
“I don’t have the kind of strength that maple has.” Chieko’s voice was touched with sadness. ...
Chieko’s downturned gaze rested on the Christian lantern at the base of the maple. She could not see the weatherworn carving well in the dim light from the house, but somehow she wanted to pray.
“Mother, where was I really born?”

Day 225 #MakeArt365

Old Maple, ink, 2015
“That’s true,” her father spoke up. “No matter how gentle a person may be, deep inside he still has much to ponder.”
Chieko was silent.
“But that’s all right, isn’t it? A child like the Kitayama cedars would be sweet, but no such child exists. And were there such a child, someday he would meet with suffering. I think, as long as a tree grows tall, it doesn’t matter if it’s bent or twisted. Take a look at the old maple in our little garden.”

Day 224 #MakeArt365

Kitayama Cedars, pencil, 2015
“You like going to the Kitayama cedar village, don’t you?” her mother said to Chieko. “Why is that?”
“The cedars all stand there so straight and beautiful. I wish human hearts grew like that.”
“Then aren’t you just like them?” her mother asked.
“No, I’m bent and twisted . . . .”

Three Trees, pencil, 2015
"To plant a tree. Sasha said there is a Russian saying that if one plants 3 trees one has saved his soul. He may have made it up."

Drains to Our Home, Riverkeeper Mural

Spent a chunk of the day painting a mural by a storm drain in Andreas park in Teaneck, NJ as part of a Hackensack Riverkeeper mural program. Was a fun quick project, even if chewed up asphalt is not the most ideal of paint surfaces.

Note to self when next painting a mural all day in a parking lot, remember to pack sunscreen.

Day 217 #MakeArt365

Dream Sequence II, pencil, 2015

File under things said in dreams that seem deeply significant while having no obvious meaning once awake.
Me: 'Alone in a car, I always feel like I'm about to be sick.'
Her: 'That tells you something.'
Later on the actor Michael Douglas said some very mean things to me and I woke up screaming...
